28 Penton Street

One of my favorite portfolio pieces was the '28 Penton Street, Centre for Memory and Learning' initiative—a rewarding Liliesleaf Trust project undertaken for the Liliesleaf Trust UK. For this anti-apartheid commission, I focused on the historic 1956 Women's March, which bravely protested the introduction of passes for Black women that had been implemented in 1952.

I experimented with the mono silkscreen printing process to create original, texture-rich images of the protest leaders and Prime Minister J.G. Strijdom. Although it was my first time utilizing this specific technique, I was extremely pleased with the final results. Learning and applying this new skill was an incredible experience, and I look forward to further developing my silkscreen printing abilities.
Ultimately, this creative exploration enabled me to produce a brief animated video inspired by my original pen-and-ink illustrations."
The project's final outcome was a simple zine that informed readers about the key individuals involved in the women's protest against passes.
